After an award-winning debut season, Iowa Stage Theater Company is bringing its first touring show “It’s A Wonderful Life: A Radio Play” to the Sondheim Theater at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center’s Stephen Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
This beloved American holiday classic comes to captivating life as a live 1940s radio broadcast. An ensemble of five actors, with the help live sound effects, brings a few dozen characters to life on the stage, sharing the story of the idealistic life of George Bailey, a generous and well-meaning man who has become too downcast and tired to continue living.
It will take help from a lovable angel to show George what life would be like if he wasn’t born for George to have a change of heart and understand the true spirit of the holidays.
“It’s A Wonderful Life: A Radio Play” features a diverse cast of Des Moines area performers including Don Rottweiler, Abdul Mokhtar, Emily Solo, Jennifer Hughes and Resident Artist Company Member John Earl Robinson. The show is being directed by Drake University’s associate professor of theatre and head of the BFA acting program, John Michael Graham.
Tickets are $30 for Zone 1, $25 for Zone 2, $20 for Zone 3, $15 for Zone 4 and $13 for youth and students. Tickets are available at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center’s ticket office and www.FairfieldACC.com.
The Dave Leffler Quartet will present its first holiday performance of the season by opening for “It’s A Wonderful Life” in the Sondheim center lobby. The quartet will be performing a selection of its holiday favorites from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
The Dave Leffler Quartet has been a popular Fairfield band since 2010, performing at FAIRfest, the Iowa City Jazz Festival, and the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center. Original band members include bandleader Dave Leffler on vocals and keyboard, Steve Jeffries on saxophone and drums, Bill Vesely on flute, and Tim Laughrin on bass. The quartet has since expanded to include Richard Hulley on guitar and Arlene Leffler on violin. The DLQ play jazz in a traditional way, with pleasing, accessible melodies and harmonies.
