Fairfield man arrested after starting room on fire

A Fairfield man was arrested early Friday morning after starting a fire in his apartment.

Peter Stuart Ashman, 37, was arrested that day outside his apartment at 308 E. Briggs Avenue in Fairfield. He was charged with simple assault and reckless use of fire or explosives.

According to a police report, a caller stated that a male subject, Ashman, had set his room on fire earlier that morning around 1:41 a.m. Even as flames were visible, Ashman refused to leave the building.

The Fairfield Fire Department responded to the scene and put out the fire in the hallway. Firefighters set up a fan to blow smoke from the building.

The report indicated that other people were in the apartment at the time of the fire, but they were evacuated. No injuries are listed.
