The body of a woman found dead along the side of Highway 38 early Tuesday has been identified as Lea Renae Ponce, a 20-year-old from Fairfield.
According to a news release, the Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office received a call about 1 a.m. Tuesday reporting a woman lying on the side of the road along Highway 38, just north of County Road F70, about 5 miles north of Muscatine. When deputies arrived, they determined the woman was dead. Police shut down the highway in order to investigate further.
A death investigation is currently underway, with the Muscatine Sheriff’s Office being assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Muscatine County Attorney’s Office. The cause and manner of death, as well as the circumstances surrounding the incident are all being examined.

An autopsy was conducted Wednesday. According to the Muscatine Sheriff’s Office, those results are not yet available.
