Pekin to have early starts rest of year

Pekin Community School District is finding innovative ways to make up time lost to snow days.

Starting Feb. 25 through the end of the year, Pekin will start the day 10 minutes earlier and dismiss five minutes later than its current schedule. That means school will start at 8:05 a.m. at both the elementary and high school. The school day will end at 3:35 p.m. Buses depart Pekin at 3:40 p.m.

Breakfast will be served at 7:50 a.m. Bus pick up times will be 15 minutes earlier. Bus drivers will communicate with specific families if there are changes.

In a letter posted to the school’s website Thursday, Pekin School Superintendent Dave Harper added that days that were previously going to be taken off will now have class.

Pekin will now have school on the following dates:

Monday, Feb. 18

Monday, March 4, - 1:30 p.m. dismissal - Iowa Assessment conversation

Monday, April 1

Monday, May 6

Friday, May 24 – 11:30 dismissal – Last day of school for students

Those with questions are invited to call Harper on his cell phone at 641-224-2524.
