The Fairfield volleyball team celebrated their 31-6 season and a run to a Class 4A regional final with their annual awards banquet Monday night.
The Trojans started the season on a five-game winning streak with conference wins over Keokuk and Mt. Pleasant, before following a 3-0 home-loss to SEC rival Fort Madison with a 1-3 record at Linn-Mar two days later.
The tough three-day stretch dropped Fairfield’s record to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the SEC, but head coach Diana Drish’s squad bounced back with a 20+ match winning streak that included tournament victories at Ottumwa, Burlington and Oskaloosa and a 5-0 run in conference play to end the season as co-champions with Fort Madison.
The Trojans easily defeated Mt. Pleasant 3-0 at home in the playoffs for their fifth victory over the Panthers in 13 undefeated sets.
Fairfield then traveled to Fort Madison where they avenged last year’s loss with a 3-2 triumph that included yet another comeback after winning the opening set.
Unfortunately, the No. 14 ranked Trojans were swept in the regional final at Cedar Rapids Xavier who finished the regular season ranked No. 2 and will play No. 3 Dallas Center-Grimes in the state semifinals Thursday after sweeping No. 7 Pella in the quarterfinals Tuesday.
