The Fairfield High School wrestling program’s lone representative at the Class 2A District 8 meet Saturday, Peyton Cline, ended the season with a 14-17 overall record after finishing fourth in the 145 pound bracket. The sophomore Cline lost by fall 1:30 into his semifinal match against junior Will Esmoil of West Liberty who qualified first in the district for the state meet in Des Moines and is 33-2 overall.
Cline then faced Solon senior Colton Spillman who won by fall 3:34 into the consolation match, but finished his season 29-13 with the win since his first round opponent, Washington junior Dillan Sanders, had fallen himself in the semifinals, blocking any opportunity to wrestle back to the second qualifying spot.
Class 1A District 8
Michael Jones finished third at 132 pounds after losing by decision, 11-7, in the semifinals to 16-19 senior Geoff Streb of Highland. Jones then finished his season 26-15 overall with a win by fall :57 into his consolation match with 12-12 freshman Teddy Metcalf of Van Buren. Jones lost the opportunity to wrestle back when his first round opponent finished second to 24-12 Wapello sophomore Christopher Ewart.
Senior Zach Hammes is headed to back to state with a 37-6 overall after qualifying second at 138 pounds. Hammes won by Major Decision, 9-1, over 26-8 senior Remington Overstake of Northeast Community in the semifinals before losing by fall to Brody Hawtrey of North Cedar 1:27 into the championship match. Hammes recovered to win by Major Decision, 13-0, over junior Trent Hendricks who was attempting to wrestle back after finishing third.
Sophomore Cael Baker is headed to state at 145 pounds after qualifying second with an overall record of 32-11. Baker won his semifinal match by pinning sophomore Evan Ross of Wapello in just 1:56. Baker then lost by fall to Brady Hahn of Highland who qualified first with an overall record of 34-3. Baker beat WACO junior Robert Frazer in the wrestle back match by pinning his opponent :30 into the third period.
Senior Hunter Conger finished fourth at 160 pounds after losing to senior Dan Burton of Highland 2:45 into the semifinals and then senior Aaron School of Northeast Community 3:13 into the consolation match. Conger finished the season 35-11 overall.
Sophomore Mason Juhl ended his season 35-9 at 195 pounds after finishing third at districts. Juhl won in the semifinals by pinning Lone Tree junior Tim Mills 1:26 into the contest. Unfortunately, Juhl lost by Major Decision, 10-2, in the championship match and then New London junior Cameron Raines defeated him in the wrestle back duel 5-4 by decision.
Jacxon Behrle finished third at 126 pounds. After losing by Technical Fall, 16-0, to Wapello junior Daniel Meeker in the semifinals, Behrle defeated North Cedar sophomore Chase Miller by fall just :54 into the consolation round. He caught a break when Meeker TF’d WACO junior Jalen Collins in the championship match to give the Comet sophomore a chance to wrestle back. Unfortunately, Collins won by fall 2:57 into the contest to hold his second place qualifying spot.
Senior Kade Chance is headed to state at 152 pounds after winning his semifinal match in just :33 over winless Wilton wrestler Zach Delever and then recovering from a 3-2 defeat by decision in the championships to Highland senior Cory Stewart by defeating Caden Benz of Mediapolis to qualify second. Chance is 27-2 overall headed to Des Moines.
Dagisteno Shilling improved to 27-2 by winning his bracket at 285 pounds to qualify first in Class 1A District 8. Shilling was listed at 324 pounds for football and used his strength to win by decision, 7-2, over senior Chase Gallagher in the semifinals and then by fall 1:21 into the championship match against Briggs Hartley of Wilton.
Bruce Claman finished his season 11-20 after a fourth place finish at 120 pounds. The freshmen Claman lost by fall 1:15 into the semifinals against junior Mitchell Moore of Wapello and by fall :27 into the consolation contest versus senior Tyler Siemen.
Teddy Metcal finished fourth at 132 pounds after losing by fall 2:47 into his semifinals match and then by fall :57 into his consolation contest with Michael Jones of Pekin. Metcalf ended his freshman season 13-12 overall.
Caleb Stoltz qualified first at 170 pounds after winning by fall 1:32 into his semifinal contest versus junior Ty Schmidt of Northeast Community and then by decision 6-4 during the championship round over eleventh grader Gabe Carter of New London. The senior Stoltz is 29-6 overall headed to Des Moines.
Tayton Bartholomew ended his senior season with a 23-5 record after winning his semifinal match by fall 1:49 into the second period against Highland junior Cael Yeggy, but falling by Major Decision in the championship round to junior Coy Baker of Wilton and then losing in the wrestle back for second against Mediapolis senior Hunter Aney who pinned the Warrior 1:29 into the contest.
The state wrestling tournament in Des Moines is held at Wells Fargo Arena Feb. 14 through Feb. 16. Good Luck to the five area grapplers who continue to battle.
