Trojans fall in two close duels

The Fairfield wrestling team fell to Burlington 42-24 and to Davis County 47-36 Thursday night at a meet that also featured Centerville and host Keokuk.

The Trojans started with a 6-0 lead after sophomore Payton Cline recorded a fall 4:49 into his leadoff match at 145 pounds. Fairfield sophomore Blakely Metz was pinned by Wilston Wuthrich :19 into the third period at 152. Senior Nickel Iseman of Fairfield collected a forfeit at 160, and than junior Caleb Heisel pinned Micah Elam at the two minute mark in the 170 match to extend the Orange and Black’s lead to 18-6.

Senior Carter Spalla and sophomore Wyatt Baker were both pinned in their matches at 182 and 195, respectively, tying the score back up at 18 points a piece.

Wrestling in the 220 pound class, Aidan Pohren collected a fall over Mitchell Boyd with just :08 left in the second period and returned the Trojans to the lead with a 24-18 advantage.

Unfortunately, Fairfield didn’t have anyone at heavyweight (285) or 106 pounds, the only two weight classes that don’t have excellent battles for varsity spots and the only two spots with no Trojan fitting the criteria.

The Mustangs extended their lead to 35-24 with a 16-1 technical fall for Tayler Huggins over 113-pound sophomore Jacob Bland at the 5:33 mark.

Junior Jonah Cooper at 120 (5:44) and sophomore Cohyn Coach-Summers at 126 (5:04) each recorded third-period pins to regain the lead for Fairfield 36-35 with just two matches remaining.

Freshman Cael McClaren was pinned :18 into his 132-pound match and then Simon Ball recorded a fall over Fairfield sophomore Logan Adams 2:40 into the final match at 138-pounds, securing the duel for the Mustangs.

Freshmen Nathan Trower(160) and Gage VanVeen(132) along with sophomore Brody Angstead(138) all recorded pins in their exhibition matches, as well.


Fairfield took a 3-0 when Logan Adam recorded a 3-2 in the first match at 138 pounds.

Payton Cline collected a forfeit and six points for the Trojans, extending their lead to 9-0 headed to the 152-pound weight class.

Burlington then scored 15 unanswered points with victories at 152, 160 and 170 over Blakely Metz, Nickel Iseman and Caleb Heisel, respectively.

Carter Spalla pinned his opponent 77 seconds into his match at 182, but then Burlington won three more matches in a row with 18 points collected at 195, 220 and heavyweight with Wyatt Baker pinned in the second period and Aidan Pohren disqualified before a forfeit at 285.

The two teams double-forfeited 106 and then Fairfield won back-to-back matches at 113 and 120 with Brecken Courtright receiving a forfeit and Jonah Cooper taking a 3-2 decision. respectively.

Cohyn Roach-Summers lost 11-8 at 126 pounds and then Cael McClaren fell :33 into the 132 match.

Brody Angstead won his exhibition match at 138 and Grady Flynn, Cesar Castellanos and Tommy Jones each fell at 195, 220 and 132, respectively.
