*Match of the night
220 Aidan Pohren over Jarrett Settles (Fort Madison) (Fall 5:31)
“It was a very even match that could have gone either way,” said head coach Steve Miller. “Scoreless after the first. They choose down and we get a locked hands call on us, so they get a penalty point. We both get an escape in the second, so we’re down 2-1 and then when you’re down a point you have to pick your pace up. You can’t wait to score or you’ll run out of time. The kid made a mistake and dropped to a knee and really Pohren ran him over and just crushed him to his back.”
“I was trying to find ways to open up a shot so that way I could get my points,” explained the sophomore.
“I just saw him take a bad standup and I went for the opportunity.”
His coach was also “really pleased with capitalizing on another kid’s mistake and getting us our only win of the night on varsity. That kept us from getting shutout and I was pleased with that,” added Miller.
285 Danen Settles (Fort Madison) win by forfeit
106 Owen Kruse (Fort Madison) win by forfeit
113 Elton Kruse (Fort Madison) over Jacob Bland (Fall 1:40)
120 Dayne Cordray (Fort Madison) over Cohyn Roach (Dec 7-0)
126 Gavin Wiseman (Fort Madison) over Gage VanVeen (Fall 1:38)
Thoughts on Fort Madison
“They are in a good spot and have a lot of good athletes on their team who have been wrestling for a while. They just beat Washington who hadn’t lost a conference duel in five years, so that tells you a little bit about where they’re at. They were just a little bit tougher than us in some matches, but we wrestled them tough and kept some matches closer than they probably could have been. Eventually we’ll start winning those matches, but overall I was pleased with the team’s fight.”
Junior varsity matches
113 Macaden Rhoer (Fort Madison) over Tommy Jones (Dec 9-7)
113 Brecken Courtright over Matthew Steffensmeier (Fort Madison) (Dec 6-5)
He took me down at first and I was a little nervous to be honest and then I had some trouble on bottom but once I got up I was more aggressive. That’s what our team has been working on and it allowed me to take him down and win the match. If I wouldn’t have been aggressive, I wouldn’t have won that match.
113 Brecken Courtright over Connor Moore (Fort Madison) (Fall 2:55)
The second match was a lot easier because I could take him down easier and get him into a pinning combination. I had trouble pinning him though because his back wasn’t touching the ground, but I got him.
126 Dawson Hunt (Fort Madison) over Tommy Jones (Fall 0:33)
145 Joey Dodson (Fort Madison) over Teya Ebert (Fall 0:44)
152 Arya Patel over Joey Dodson (Fort Madison) (Fall 5:26)
160 Nickel Iseman over Austin Ensminger (Fort Madison) (Fall 2:20)
160 Mason Rohdy (Fort Madison) over Nathan Trower (Fall 3:13)
170 Chance Decker (Fort Madison) over Nathan Trower (Fall 3:25)
195 Cesar Castellanos over Bryce Britton (Fort Madison) (Fall 2:34)
“I thought the junior varsity looked good tonight and came out and set an early pace and wrestled hard and aggressive which gave us some good momentum heading into that varsity match,” said Miller.
“The guys are all doing some good nice things and working on squaring up an opponent on defense and getting more aggressive on legs and attacking. We want to see more of that, but overall I was pleased with their effort or attitude.”
