FHS not only has the top two female tennis players in the state of Iowa with sophomore Yana Gaskell and senior Anatta Charoenkul, they have a pretty solid squad that fills the other four singles slots and 2/3 of the doubles roster.

“We did really well,” said head coach Heidi Grunwald, “even compared to the last time we played them when the No. 5 and No. 6 players went to tiebreakers.”

Coach Grunwald said it’s pretty easy to keep the girls motivated while they tend to steam roll their competition.

“We just keep working and honestly they are pretty good about staying on things and practicing,” explained the Trojan skipper. “Once in a while I have them play Yana or Anatta and they go, “Oh my god, Mrs. G!” but it’s good for them to hit against those two, but for the most part they are good about staying focused.”

Two of a kind

Gaskell and Charoenkul are self-motivated and help push each other and their teammates.

“It doesn’t take much,” said Grunwald about getting her top pair ready. “I just tell those two to hit and it’s kind of amazing to watch.”

Always improving

“For most of them, we just need to make sure we are moving our feet so that we can get to the ball. Sometimes, we’re not doing that. The other thing I sometimes see is us not really hitting the ball. We might just tap it over, but those are the two big things I see,” said Coach G.

Thursday the team soundly defeated Mt. Pleasant 8-1.
